Payroll and Human Resources Records Retention — Avoiding Legal Liability

We will provide an overview of best practices for payroll/human resources records retention, along with a discussion of how payroll records can be used in legal suits under the Fair Labor Standards Act, Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, ERISA, and audits by regulatory authorities. As a side note, we will also bring you up to date on new guidance issued about health care reform that affects payroll practitioners.

CLAIRE GAGNON: Claire Gagnon is an attorney in Leonard, Street and Deinard’s Labor and Employment practice group. She counsels and represents clients in a variety of employment-related areas, including hiring, discipline, drug and alcohol testing, workplace violence, background checks, workplace harassment, general employer policies and practices, and compliance with state and federal labor and employment laws.

THERESA CORONA: Theresa Corona is a shareholder at Leonard, Street and Deinard. She focuses her practice in Compensation and Employee Benefits. She counsels clients regarding health and welfare benefit plan issues, qualified retirement plans, equity plans, nonqualified deferred compensation arrangements and payroll and fringe benefits issues. Prior to joining Leonard, Street and Deinard, Theresa was an attorney with the employee benefits and executive compensation department of a large law firm in Chicago, and later worked in the tax department at Indiana University, concentrating in nonresident alien and payroll taxation issues.

The next Northstar Chapter meeting will be held at the Metropolitan on Thursday, July 15, 2010. This will be our annual meeting and the topic will be Internal Controls.
